L: Mary Lou Slaughter as photographed for the Descendants Project.

R: Kikisoblu, also known as Princess Angeline, Mary Lou's great-great-great grandmother.

Mary Lou Slaughter is the great-great-great-granddaughter of Kikisoblu, known in Seattle as Princess Angeline. She was Edward Curtis’s first Native person that he took portraits of in 1896. Appropraitely,Mary Lou is our first Descendant to be photographed for the DescendantsProject.

Princess Angeline was the daughter of Chief Seattle of which the city of Seattle is named for.  She is of the Duwamish Nation in the Pacific Northwest.

Mary Lou was bullied as a child and decided to hide her Native heritage until turning 50. Can’t wait to share her whole story with you in the book!
